Worth $300 or More For a Jar?

Are expensive skincare products better than cheaper alternatives?

By Lai Wei

Have you ever wondered why some skincare products sell for up to $300 while others are under $30? Do you want to know whether your moisturizer is actually worth the splurge? Are high-end and expensive skincare products really better than cheaper alternatives?

Some may assume that expensive products have better results. Surprisingly, this is not always the case. It’s important to look at what makes those toners and moisturizers worth the money.

What makes skincare products cost you A LOT?
Marketing is a critical factor that impacts the price of a product. Successful marketing campaigns tell good brand stories thereby convincing consumers to trust the company and buy their products for higher prices.

Perry Romanowski, a cosmetic chemist and the founder of The Beauty Brains blog, believed that “product cost has little to do with the effectiveness of the product”. Luxury product is part of luxury lifestyle, and when he or she purchases high end skincare products, they are buying into that luxury lifestyle.

Even though you may not realize it, texture has a massive impact on product pricing. This is known as the “elegance of formula.” For example, you can feel the difference between a $300 moisturizer and $20 one when applying it. The texture of the more expensive one is usually soft and smooth as opposed to the rather tacky and draggy texture of the cheaper, said Joyce de Lemos, a cosmetic chemist at a major beauty brand.

Is it really worth it to splurge on expensive skincare products?

Short answer: maybe.

The most important takeaway is: do your research. This may seem like an obvious tip, but it is the most efficient way to decide whether a luxury product is worth the investment. One example: caffeinated eye treatments are effective on dark circles and puffiness, so you can shop for products based upon your needs and find ones with the best active ingredients for the job. This is more efficient.

At the end of the day, it is about finding out what you actually need. Then you could either buy a luxury product or substitute it with a less expensive version with similar ingredients.
