Skincare is known for being a female-only indulgence, but it shouldn't be! Men are starting to care more and more about their skin’s condition too. Yet, many men still use ‘all-in-one’ products and follow the rule of ‘as simple as possible.’ “What should I do then?” you may be asking. Here are the answers.
“Yes you can use female skin care products.”
Males and females have the same skin structure, which means men also have the same problems that come with oily, dry, or sensitive skin types. They need oil-control and moisturization like women do. So yes, men could use what many consider “female products.” All they need to do is figure out what problems they have and how to deal with them effectively.
Still, men do have unique skin features. For example, they have around 40% more oil secretion on their faces than women. The thickness of their stratum corneum (the outer layer of the skin, which serves as the primary barrier between the body and the environment) is about 1.3 times that of women. Men also tend to lose more water from their skin. There are products tailored for men on the market. If you know what concerns you want to address, “female skincare products” are also good choices - the more options, the better!
“Please don’t skimp on your skincare routines”
Some of my male friends tell me that they are too lazy to put on ‘all those skincare products’ every day. They wonder if there’s an ‘all-in-one’ moisturizer or toner. If you feel the same way, there are at least four steps you could follow - without getting annoyed.
First, clean your face. Because men’s skin is about 40% more oily than women, oil-control is necessary. Washing your face decently helps you stay fresh. This is also a key step to prevent acne since there won’t be too much oil on your face to cause clogged pores.
Second, moisturizer and oil control. This is where you could be lazy and buy an ‘all-in-one’ product. Most men want their skincare routines to be as simple as possible, and companies know that. So they have products like “essence moisturizer” - a combination of essence and lotion. For moisturizing, it’s enough to have one bottle according to your budget. The only thing you need to decide are texture and scent.
Then comes post-shave treatment. Does your face turn a bit red or itchy after you shave? Shaving can create tiny cuts all over your face and cause redness or acne from the irritation. After shaving, make sure to clean your face and apply post-shaving lotion. It helps calm your skin and shrink pores.
Last but not least - sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! The importance of sunblock can never be stressed enough. It is the last step of daily skincare routine. Because there’s more melanin in male skin, it’s easier for men to tan rather than burn - making men more likely to be unconcerned about sun exposure. Think about the UV damage. Want to have youthful skin tomorrow? Put on sunblock today!
No one will judge you for caring about your skin, so start today! These four simple steps will help you maintain better skin, and it’s never too late for you to get started. You will feel the difference once you start.
